This quote conjures up a powerful image of a charitable person keeping the poor at arms length, and charity practitioners of days gone by warned strongly against it. Why? Because they knew that the real vehicle for transformation of circumstances was through relationship.

So often, though, our poverty alleviation strategies sure look a lot like tongs: with the best of intentions, we load people up with food or clothing and send them on our way. But perhaps the real act of mercy more often looks like a willingness to walk alongside the person in poverty on his path and help find the way to smoother trails. But what does it look like to “walk alongside” someone in poverty? Where does one even begin?
